Institute Report of the IMGWF 2007-2013
30 Years History of Medicine and Science in Lübeck – Five Years Institute for History of Medicine and Science Studies
In the course of expanding medical studies in Lübeck to include preclinical training a new professorship in history of medicine was established in 1983 at the Medizinische Hochschule, as it was then called. Prof Dr. Dietrich von Engelhardt, the first chair was determined to
expand this into an Institute for the History of Medicine and of Science, well recognized far beyond Lübeck. In 2007, Prof. Dr. Cornelius Borck from McGill University followed him as director of the institute. He maintained the institutes broad positioning and emphasized a special focus on contemporary questions by modifying the name to „Institute for History of Medicine and Sciences Studies. Inaugurating the new name and celebrating the institutes 25th birthday the symposium “Wozu historische Wissenschaftsforschung?” (Why historical science studies?) was held in 2008.
In 2013, after five more years, it was time for an interim report focussing on research projects, publications, conferences and events. The report does not intend to be a Festschrift on 30 years of the institute's history, but rather an account for colleagues, coinciding with the universities 30th birthday.
In 2014, the University of Lübeck celebrated its 50th birthday. With this report, presented just in time for the anniversary, we thank the university for its open-mindedness and openness to the special concerns and interests that may occasionally appear to stand at odds with MINT-topics. However, the IMGWF hopes to create productive friction rather than throwing sand into the gears of the section.
