Born in 1959 in Laufenburg (Switzerland)
1978 - 1989
First degree in molecular biology with a diploma at the Biozentrum of the University of Basel. Second degree with a "licentiate" in philosophy and sociology at the universities of Basel and Freiburg im Breisgau.
1989 - 1996
Research assistant in bioethics in the research group of Prof. Werner Arber in the Institute for Microbiology at the Biozentrum of the University of Basel
Teaching and publications in many areas of practical philosophy, especially on nature, biology, biotechnology and medicine.
1990 - 1995
Doctoral studies in philosophy at the Technical University of Darmstadt under Prof. Gernot Böhme.
1995 - 2000
Habilitation in philosophy at the University of Basel.
Since 1996
Establishment and management of the Office for Ethics in the Life Sciences, which includes a research group and a number of funded projects; in collaboration with Dr. Jackie Leach Scully.
The projects combine qualitative social research and normative reflection in bioethics. Topics include: somatic gene therapy, genetic testing, genetically modified organisms, views of patients at and at the end of their life, reproductive medicine and embryo and stem cell research. She receives support from the Swiss National Science Foundation, the Swiss Academy of Medical Sciences, Oncosuisse, the EU and others.

Research Fellow at the Department of Environmental Science, Policy and Management (ESPM) at the University of California at Berkeley.

Assistant Professor of Bioethics at the University of Basel.
2001 - 2009
President of the Swiss National Ethics Committee in the field of human medicine. Elected by the Swiss government, advises parliament and the government on bioethical issues.
