Medical Association
A special treasure of the institute is the former library of the Medical Association, one of the oldest medical associations in the German-speaking world. The collection has been housed at the institute on permanent loan since 1993 and was previously in the archive of the Lübeck City Library. The collection includes monographs from the 16th to the 20th century and important journals and represents an important collection of about 30,000 works of medicine from the Renaissance to the present day.
The Lübeck Medical Association, founded in 1809, is one of the oldest medical associations in the German-speaking world; there had been a medical reading society in Lübeck since 1805. Soon after its founding, the Lübeck Medical Association tried to build a library. In 1819, the library was founded, which, due to the growth of the holdings in the following decades, was housed in various places, including the courthouse in Burgstraße. In 1922, the library had to be handed over to the city due to lack of space and was kept in the archive of the city library.
It is made accessible on the one hand by a handwritten alphabetical card catalogue on microfiche and on the other hand by a systematic volume catalogue. In recent years, the entire collection of historical books has been recorded online in the Common Library Network (GBV) in order to enable comprehensive use and research.
The holdings are also listed in the electronic catalogue of the Central University Library under the abbreviation 'IMGWF AM ÄV'.
