Children’s Blood Stem Cell Donation to their Siblings: The Child’s Welfare in Ethical Conflict

PI:
Prof. Dr. Christoph Rehmann-Sutter
Prof. Dr. Christina Schües

Whenever diseases treatable with hematopoietic stem cell transplantation arise, a fundamental legal and ethical conflict emerges: the welfare of one sibling is not equivalent to that of the other. The interventions necessary for bone marrow or peripheral blood stem cell donation lack medical indication for the donor child. Instead, the decision to proceed is based solely on the needs of the sibling who is to receive the cells.

Determinates for Guideline-Incongruent Care of Older Cancer Patients in the Statutory Health Insurance (DELIVER)

Medical guidelines reflect the current state of medicine and science. They are an instrument to uniformly ensure high-quality treatment (for everyone?). This is particularly important in life-threatening diseases, such as cancer. Yet, there is evidence suggesting that these guidelines are oftentimes not met in the treatment of elderly patients. The research project DELIVER explores potential reasons, factors, and processes contributing to these deviations.
